ViaRewind

It will also connect players from very old versions — 1.8 and 1.7 — to the new server.

What does it do?

ViaRewind is the third part of the version translation suite. While ViaVersion covers newer clients and ViaBackwards covers the moderately old ones, ViaRewind takes care of very old versions — mainly 1.8.x and 1.7.x.

This is practical because 1.8 is still popular for PvP: many players use it deliberately, because reach and combat speed are calculated differently in it. ViaRewind lets them play on a modern server without giving up their version.

ViaRewind can't do anything on its own — it needs both ViaVersion and ViaBackwards, ideally in the same version. All three are installed in the same place (on the proxy, if you use a proxy).

Translation from 1.8 to a modern server has visible limits: some mechanics are different in 1.8 (combat, food, item drops). ViaRewind tries to bring the behavior closer, but it doesn't turn 1.8 into a new version — players will see the old behavior where possible.

If PvP in 1.8 is important to you, go through the settings with players who actually use 1.8. This is the area that gets tuned most often.

Installation

  1. Install ViaVersion and ViaBackwards — ViaRewind doesn't work without them.
  2. Unify versions: all three must be from the same series. Verify /viaversion version.
  3. Download ViaRewind from modrinth.com/plugin/viarewind in the same version.
  4. Upload the .jar to the plugins folder (on the proxy, if you use a proxy).
  5. Restart the server.
  6. Check the console to confirm that all three parts loaded without error.
  7. Verify with a player on version 1.8 (or 1.7) that they can connect and play.
  8. Check the /viaversion list output — the player must be there with version 1.8 (or 1.7).
  9. Go through the basics with players on the old version: movement, combat, opening chests, teleports. That's where problems will show up first.
  10. After updating the server (new Minecraft version), replace all three plugins together.

Permissions

Permissions are granted to players or groups — most often with a command /lp user <player> permission set <node> true (LuckPerms). A node that is not in the list is unknown to the plugin.

Permissions What does it allow?
ViaRewind does not have player permissions it is controlled via ViaVersion (see its guide).

Commands

Type it in chat with slashes as well. Where is it? <player> or <uzel>, fill in your own value without brackets.

Command What does it do?
ViaRewind does not have its own commands for players it is managed via ViaVersion. You can recognize it by players with version 1.8 or 1.7 in the /viaversion list. output.

Configuration and common mistakes

ViaRewind cannot do without ViaVersion and ViaBackwards, and all three must be from the same release line. If one is missing, players from 1.8 will not connect.
A translation from 1.8 does not mean a player behaves as in 1.8. Some mechanics remain modern — players notice this mainly in combat.
On a PvP server, verify reach and combat speed with players who actually use 1.8. This is an area that is tuned most often.
Install all three add-ons on the proxy, not on the game servers. On individual servers, double translation would occur.
When a player from 1.8 connects but crashes on teleport or world change, check that all three plugins have the same version and that they run on the proxy.
Download plugins from Modrinth or from the authors' websites, not from unverified sources — with add-ons for version translation, forged files appear more often than elsewhere.

Where does the guide come from?

The guide is our own and is based on the author's documentation. We describe permissions and commands as facts, we don't make anything up — if plugin changes after an update, the guide may be out of date.
