Vault

An intermediary between plugins and the economy — on its own it can't do anything, but without it some plugins don't work.

What does it do?

Vault is not a plugin that players see in action. It is an intermediary (it is called an API): it has no commands for players or permissions of its own; it only provides an interface between plugins that need to work with money, permissions, and chat.

Practical impact: when you have Vault installed along with an economy plugin (for example EssentialsX Economy or CMI), commands such as /balance, /pay a /worth i obchody v dal in other plugins start working. Without Vault, these plugins act as if there is no money on the server, and they report in the console that they did not find an economy.

Vault also unifies permissions: a plugin that needs to find out whether a player is allowed to do something asks Vault, and Vault asks LuckPerms. That is why Vault is also installed on servers where there is no economy — it is enough that another plugin requires it.

The third area is chat and its formatting: Vault can pass a formatting layer between a chat plugin and another plugin, so prefixes do not have to be set twice.

When Vault is not working, you will not notice it on Vault itself, but on the others: shops do not want money, /balance hl reports an error, vote rewards are not paid out. At server startup, therefore, look in the console for a line saying whether Vault found an economy, permissions, and chat.

Always install only one Vault and never two economy plugins next to each other — Vault will choose one, and you would then be looking for why the balance is not calculated the way you expect.

Installation

  1. Find out which plugins require Vault. Run /plugins a pod and look whether any reports a missing Vault, or it will say so in the console on startup.
  2. Download Vault from dev.bukkit.org/projects/vault (it is not on Modrinth) in the version for your server version.
  3. Upload the .jar to the plugins folder.
  4. Install alongside it what it is supposed to handle: an economy plugin for money, LuckPerms for permissions, and optionally a chat plugin.
  5. Restart the server and watch the console — Vault prints whether it found economy, permissions, and chat. If it says for some item that it has nothing, Vault has no counterpart for it.
  6. Run /vault-info — it will list what Vault handles for you (economy: plugin name, permissions: name, chat: name).
  7. Verify the economy: Run /balance mus — it should return a number if the player has permission for it.
  8. Verify permissions: a command that requires something (for example /fly) must behave according to the groups in LuckPerms.
  9. Never leave two economy plugins installed at the same time — Vault will use one and then you won't know which one is counting the money.
  10. If shops started behaving strangely after adding Vault, check that the economy plugin uses the same currency that players see.

Permissions

Permissions are granted to players or groups — most often with a command /lp user <player> permission set <node> true (LuckPerms). A node that is not in the list is unknown to the plugin.

Permissions What does it allow?
Vault itself has no permissions the permissions that players need belong to the economy plugin (e.g. essentials.balance for /balance) or to the permissions plugin (LuckPerms).

Commands

Type it in chat with slashes as well. Where is it? <player> or <uzel>, fill in your own value without brackets.

Command What does it do?
Vault has no commands for players only an admin /vault-info that lists what Vault handles (economy, permissions, chat).

Configuration and common mistakes

Vault has no configuration to set up. When something behaves strangely, the problem is always in the plugin that used Vault — not in Vault.
When after startup the console reports that Vault couldn't find an economy, you don't have any economy plugin, or Vault can't handle it. Most commonly EssentialsX Economy or CMI is used.
Two economies side by side are the worst option: Vault will use one and you'll be looking for why the balance isn't calculated as expected.
Vault isn't updated often, but builds for newer Minecraft versions are released. If money or permissions stopped working after a server update, check Vault.
Uninstallation: plugins that required Vault will stop working after removing it, and some will crash. Remove it only when you know who was using it.
If chat prefixes disappeared after adding Vault, it's usually because the chat format is now handled by Vault and another plugin is overwriting it. Keep one path.

Where does the guide come from?

The guide is our own and is based on the author's documentation. We describe permissions and commands as facts, we don't make anything up — if plugin changes after an update, the guide may be out of date. (version Vault 1.7.x (Paper/Spigot)) Did you find an error? Write to us and we'll fix it.
