Chisel
Hundreds of block variants — it turns one stone into twenty different looks.
← Mods World and Builds guide for Chisel — classic version for 1.12.2 (and older)
What does it do?
Chisel adds hundreds of variants of ordinary blocks. From stone, wood, bricks, or metals, it creates dozens of looks — smooth, decorated, cracked, with ornaments. For builders, it is one of the most valuable mods: a build stops looking like it is made of cubes and starts having details.
It is used through a tool (chisel), with which the player clicks on a block and chooses a variant. Some variants can also be crafted in a crafting table, but the main path is precisely the chisel.
Chisel belongs among modpack mods of an older era — you will find it on servers with version 1.12.2 and similar, where it is still used today (several servers in our list report it). For newer versions, there are other mods with the same idea, but this classic one holds on.
It is installed on both sides: on the server, so that the blocks exist in the world, and on the players’ side, so that they can see them. On a modded server, this means that a player must install the same setup — otherwise they either cannot connect, or they will see the blocks as something else.
A practical consequence for operators: Chisel increases the demands of assembling a modpack, because it adds a lot of blocks. It is worth taking it into account in backups (the world grows) and when compiling the list of mods for players.
Installation
- Chisel belongs on the server and with the players — the same version on both sides for the same game version.
- Stop the server and back up the world — after adding a mod that adds blocks, the world changes.
- Download Chisel from the author's official page (the link is on the mod card) for your game version and loader.
- Upload the .jar to the mods folder on the server (on the client, to the mods folder in the game).
- Start the server and check the console — the mod must load without errors.
- Connect from the client with the same mod version and test that the blocks can be crafted or obtained.
- Try the chisel: click a block with it and go through the variant menu (it can be long, look for a search).
- Tell the players that they need to have the mod installed, and state the version — without it they won't see the blocks correctly.
- Check that block variants are saved to the world and survive a server restart.
- When backing up, take into account that the world is larger — block variants take up space.
- When updating the game, verify that Chisel exists for the new version; for older versions, the mod does not update and stays on its own.
Configuration and common mistakes
Chisel is an old mod for 1.12.2 and similar versions. Before deploying it on a newer server, verify that it exists for your version — otherwise players won't see the blocks.
It belongs on both sides. If you put it only on the server, players will see other blocks instead of the variants and builds will look broken.
It increases the size of the world and the mod list for players. Take that into account with backups and when assembling a modpack.
The chisel has many variants; advise players to use the search in the menu, otherwise they'll be lost.
The mod version on players and on the server must be the same. With modpacks, this is handled by giving players the whole pack, not individual mods.
If the world doesn't load after adding the mod, go back to the backup — for mods that change blocks, a backup before installation is mandatory.

Where does the guide come from?
The guide is our own and is based on the author's documentation. We describe permissions and commands as facts, we don't make anything up — if mod changes after an update, the guide may be out of date.
