What does it do?

Iron Chests solves a simple problem: not enough space. It adds chests that are larger than the ordinary one — iron, gold, diamond, and finally crystal.

It is one of those mods that players appreciate on the very first day and then can no longer imagine playing without. Storing resources is an eternal problem in Minecraft, and more space means less running between chests and a smaller world (fewer chests means fewer blocks).

The crystal chest has one peculiarity: it shows its contents even when it is closed. When a player looks at it, they can see what is inside — it is useful for overview storage and for chests with valuable items.

Installation is simple and the mod is small: it belongs on both sides, on the server and with the players. Without the mod on the player's side, they will see a regular chest or a nonsensical block instead of the chest.

For operators, it is practical that the mod doesn't burden anything (no extra machines or entities) and has almost no configuration. One thing is worth checking, though: if you use a chest-locking plugin, verify that it also supports the mod's chests. Not every one knows them, and players then report that someone has robbed their base.

Installation

  1. Iron Chests belongs on the server and with players — the same version on both sides.
  2. Find out the server loader (Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric) and download the mod from modrinth.com/mod/iron-chests for your game version.
  3. Stop the server and back up the world — players' items are stored in the chests.
  4. Upload the .jar to the server's mods folder; players do the same on their side.
  5. Start the server and check the console that the mod loaded without errors.
  6. Join and craft an iron chest — you can find the recipe in Just Enough Items (JEI) or in the guide on the mod page.
  7. Verify that the chest really has more space than a regular one.
  8. Try the crystal chest: its contents must be visible even if you don't close or open it.
  9. Check that stored items survive a server restart.
  10. If you use a chest-locking plugin, verify that it also supports chests from this mod.
  11. Tell players they need the mod on their side too — otherwise they won't see the chests correctly.

Configuration and common mistakes

The mod is small and barely puts any load on anything. It has no machines or extra entities, so you don't have to worry about server performance.
It is needed on both sides. Without the mod on the player's side, chests disappear or show up as other blocks — and worse, they may not be able to access the items.
If you use a chest-locking plugin, verify that it also recognizes chests from the mod. Not every one does, and players then report theft.
Before installing, back up the world, even if the mod is simple. There are players' items in the chests, and a version error can invalidate them.
Mod chests are part of the world, so they are backed up along with it. Nothing special has to be configured.
The mod version must match the game version on the players' side too. With such a simple mod, people forget about the version — and then wonder why they can't see the chest.
