What does it do?
DecentHolograms can create floating text in the world — several lines that stay in place and players see them even when they’re just passing by. It’s the easiest way to get information directly into the world, without opening a menu or typing in chat.
What it’s used for: welcome at spawn, server rules, prices at shops, countdown to an event, player stats (money, level), shop names, or information boards by portals. It can also be a guide on where to go.
Text can work with PlaceholderAPI: you can insert the server name, online player count, the player’s money, or level from other plugins — and the text updates itself.
Lines can be animated (switching texts), and each hologram has multiple pages that can be switched between. From a practical standpoint, though: the less text, the better — nobody reads a hologram with twenty lines.
Holograms are created in-game with commands. There’s no need to edit anything in files, which is an advantage for server admins — you stand in place and see the result.
Bedrock players (from phones) can see the floating text, but it may display differently in some versions. If the server supports Bedrock, test it with Geyser and Floodgate.
Installation
- Download DecentHolograms from modrinth.com/plugin/decentholograms for your server version.
- Upload the .jar to the plugins folder and restart the server.
- Check that it is running: /dh help vyp prints help.
- Stand at the place where the hologram should be and create it: /dh create .
- Add the first line of text: /dh addline .
- Add further lines with the same command — each line is one command.
- Check that the hologram is in the right place, and by turning your head verify that you can see it from all sides.
- When you need to edit the text, use /dh setline or delete the line (/dh removeline).
- If the hologram should react to data (players online, money), verify that PlaceholderAPI is running and that the placeholder text in the hologram is filled in correctly.
- For a hologram that moves or alternates texts, set up an animation and check that it does not disturb the surroundings.
- Check permissions: a regular player should not do anything with holograms; only management manages them.
Permissions
Permissions are granted to players or groups — most often with a command /lp user <player> permission set <node> true (LuckPerms). A node that is not in the list is unknown to the plugin.
| Permissions | What does it allow? |
|---|---|
| decentholograms.* | hologram management (management only) |
| decentholograms.command.<command> | permission for individual commands |
| decentholograms.teleport | teleport to a hologram |
| decentholograms.page | hologram page switching |
| A regular player usually does not have any of these permissions | holograms are a matter for management. |
Commands
Type it in chat with slashes as well. Where is it? <player> or <uzel>, fill in your own value without brackets.
| Command | What does it do? |
|---|---|
| /dh help | help |
| /dh create <name> | creates a hologram at your location |
| /dh delete <name> | deletes the hologram |
| /dh addline <name> [text] | adds a line of text |
| /dh insertline <name> <line> [text] | inserts a line at a specific position |
| /dh setline <name> <line> <text> | overwrites a line |
| /dh removeline <name> <line> | deletes a line |
| /dh edit <name> | opens hologram editing |
| /dh movehere <name> | moves the hologram to where you are standing |
| /dh teleport <name> | teleports you to the hologram |
| /dh center <name> | centers the hologram at the location |
| /dh align <name> | aligns the hologram |
| /dh list | lists all holograms |
| /dh reload | reloads the configuration |
Configuration and common mistakes
Less text is more. A hologram is read on the go, so a player will notice three lines and skip twenty. Put important things at the top.
Text can pull data from other plugins via PlaceholderAPI (players online, money, level). Verify that the values actually refresh — not that old text has remained.
A hologram stays at its coordinates. When players fall through or the hologram appears inside a wall, move it (/dh movehere) and check the height.
An animation of alternating lines is flashy, but with a large number of holograms it puts a load on the server. On public servers, it’s worth using sparingly.
After every server update, check that the holograms are positioned correctly. Changes in versions can shift the display.
When only some players can’t see a hologram, verify that they have sufficient view distance and that the hologram isn’t inside a block.
Back up plugins/DecentHolograms — all the texts are in it. Rewriting them manually again is a pain.
