What does it do?
TAB edits three things that players see all the time: the player list (Tab key), the overhead name, and the bar with text at the top of the screen. It can put a prefix from LuckPerms, the online player count, the balance, and anything else via PlaceholderAPI into them.
The basis is the layout in the configuration: the header, footer, and tab list columns are made up of text and placeholders. Instead of manually rewriting files, /tab reload can be used, so changes take effect immediately and it is convenient to tweak.
Overhead names (nametags) are also set in the configuration — and note: only a limited number of characters are visible above the head, long prefix combinations get cut off. Likewise, you can't display anything that would change the name length.
TAB can also do a bar with text at the top (boss bar, for example with the player count) and a sidebar on the right (scoreboard — nowadays it is used mainly on older versions).
When the text doesn't appear, it's usually PlaceholderAPI: TAB doesn't get placeholders by itself, but from it. You must have the necessary expansions installed (Player, Vault, Server, Luckperms), otherwise the placeholders will remain as plain text or empty.
Almost everyone on Czech servers has TAB, because a tab list without LuckPerms prefixes looks unfinished — and it's one of the first things a player notices after joining.
Installation
- Install PlaceholderAPI (TAB takes placeholders from it) and LuckPerms if you want prefixes.
- Download TAB from modrinth.com/plugin/tab-was-taken or from dev.bukkit.org in the version for your server version.
- Upload the .jar to the plugins folder and restart the server.
- A line will appear in the console with the TAB version and where its configuration is located (plugins/TAB).
- Open plugins/TAB/config.yml and set the tab list header and footer — placeholders are used in them (e.g. %server_online%).
- In the tab list section, set the row format (e.g. %luckperms_prefix% %player%). Placeholders from LuckPerms require the Luckperms expansion in PAPI (/papi ecloud download Luckperms).
- Type /tab reload a pod and watch the tab list in game (Tab key). The text must appear immediately.
- Edit the name above the head (nametag) — set the prefix and color. Stick to short texts; longer ones will be cut off.
- Use custom TAB placeholders (for example for player count) and check the status with the command /tab list.
- Check the changes with another player — the tab list is sent to each player separately, so it won't verify itself.
Permissions
Permissions are granted to players or groups — most often with a command /lp user <player> permission set <node> true (LuckPerms). A node that is not in the list is unknown to the plugin.
| Permissions | What does it allow? |
|---|---|
| tab.admin | TAB administration (/tab reload, /tab list) |
| tab.see | see the tab list (usually for everyone) |
| tab.nametag | use the name above the head (usually for everyone) |
| tab.bossbar | see the bar with text at the top |
| tab.scoreboard | see the scoreboard on the right (older versions) |
| tab.* | absolutely everything (admin only) |
Commands
Type it in chat with slashes as well. Where is it? <player> or <uzel>, fill in your own value without brackets.
| Command | What does it do? |
|---|---|
| /tab reload | reloads the configuration (changes are visible immediately) |
| /tab list | lists who the tab list is sent to |
| /tab player <player> | sets the tab list for one player (for debugging) |
| /tab debug <player> | enables verbose output for one player |
| /tab cpu | how much TAB consumes (performance check) |
| /tab help | help for all subcommands |
Configuration and common mistakes
TAB doesn't calculate anything by itself — it takes placeholders from PlaceholderAPI. If %luckperms_prefix% appears in the tab list as text, the LuckPerms expansion for PAPI is missing (and after downloading it, /papi reload is needed).
Colors in TAB are written with the & character (for example &6 for gold). If a color doesn't work, check that the text is in the part that TAB actually renders, and that the file was loaded via /tab reload.
Jm. The name above the head has a limited length and gets trimmed. If the prefix doesn't fit, shorten it — players will only see the beginning.
The tab list is sent to each player separately, so the same text for everyone won't overload the server. The problem starts with dozens of placeholders that update frequently — in that case, measure via /tab cpu.
Kdy. If the tab list doesn't load, look in the console. TAB reports when it can't find PlaceholderAPI or when the configuration has an error (a badly indented line).
After editing the config, /tab reload is enough; a restart isn't needed. But restart after updating TAB (after a new server version) — the configuration may change.

Where does the guide come from?
The guide is our own and is based on the author's documentation. We describe permissions and commands as facts, we don't make anything up — if plugin changes after an update, the guide may be out of date. (version TAB 5.x (Paper/Spigot)) Did you find an error? Write to us and we'll fix it.
